Mental Health Bill 2024
25/11/2024
On Wednesday 6th November the Mental Health bill was introduced into parliament by the minister responsible for mental health, Baroness Merron. According to the government, the new bill aims to โgive patients sectioned under the Mental Health Act more dignity and say over their care.โ
Key proposals in the bill
โข The introduction of statutory care and treatment plans to ensure tailored support for individuals.
โข Ending the use of prison cells for those experiencing a mental health crisis, providing more humane alternatives.
โข Reforms to Community Treatment Orders (CTOs) to address the disproportionate impact they have on Black communities.
This introduction marks an important step toward a fairer, more effective mental health system for the 50,000 people who are sectioned each year.
