Skyway, based in North London, have been doing invaluable with the local youth community with a huge variety of activities. SW hold school holiday and afterschool sessions for children and young people that include cooking lessons, graffiti art sessions, recording sessions in their on-site studio, football on their Astro-turf pitch, homework clubs and sessions to help inclusion within the community. Skyway also provide a place for young people to relax after school, talk to the staff about any troubles they may be having and see friends within their community. All of these sessions and classes take place at the Blue Hut in Hackney.
Little Lives UK has donated 15 laptops to be used in their afterschool homework clubs for children who otherwise wouldn’t be able to complete their online learning due to not having their own technology at home. As part of our Technology Programme, Little Lives UK strive to end technology poverty and ensure that all children who are without the relevant technology for virtual learning and the seemingly ever increasingly virtual world, do have access to the equipment needed.
Many of the young people and children who access the services at the Blue Hut live in the Wenlock Barn Estate and Murray Grove, which is in the most 1-2% most financially deprived areas of the UK. All of the young people who attend were on free school meals and those all of those who attend college don’t have access to a computer and have asked SW for support regarding this. Having no computer whilst attending college, and even school in today’s world, leaves the students at risk of not being able to keep up with their academic work.
Among the hard work they do which also includes providing afterschool meals for those who would otherwise go without, another reason that projects like Skyway is so important for the community, is that it acts as a safe place to prevent young people being involved in crime. As reported by one of the Skyway team members, the risk of becoming involved in gang culture or criminal activity is relatively high in the area, so the use of the Blue Hut and the services it offers, creates a place for young people to avoid becoming involved.
Little Lives UK is delighted to be supporting such a worthwhile cause such as Skyway and the work they do at the Blue Hut. If you would like to see more of what the team there offer and the incredible work that they do, please visit their website at skyway.london.
